Family-Friendly Baton Rouge: A Real Mom’s Guide to Visiting with Kids

We recently took a little getaway to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and it was such a sweet multigenerational trip! I traveled with my mom, my sister, my grandma, and two of my little girls—and while not every moment was Pinterest-perfect, we made some beautiful memories and discovered several spots worth sharing with other moms planning a family adventure.

So here’s a real mom’s review of Baton Rouge—complete with the highs, the so-so’s, and everything in between: (links for everything are included at the end of the post)

Where We Stayed: Hampton Inn & Suites College Drive

We usually love staying at Hilton properties, but this particular hotel was... meh. It’s in dire need of a remodel and didn’t have the usual Hilton polish we’re used to. That said, the location was super convenient for getting around Baton Rouge, which made exploring the city with little ones and older family members much easier.

Where We Ate

Curbside Burgers
This spot had rave reviews from other bloggers—especially for being kid-friendly with outdoor space. The burgers were amazing (seriously, so good!), but the outdoor area wasn’t quite what we hoped. Not much room for kids to play safely, so just a heads-up if you were counting on that.

Cafe Petra
We absolutely loved this Greek restaurant. The staff were incredibly kind, and we ordered one of the family meal platters that fed all six of us (4 adults and 2 kids) with leftovers to spare! Everything was fresh and full of flavor—a total win.

Arctic Bites
This was a fun treat for everyone! It’s a tiny little shop tucked away, but the rolled ice cream and unique flavors were a hit. My girls were mesmerized watching their ice cream being made right in front of them.

Coffee Call
No trip to Louisiana is complete without beignets, right? We found this cute little shop and loved everything about it—the service was fantastic, the beignets were hot and fresh, and my mom and sister said the coffee was some of the best they’ve had in a while.

What We Did

Knock Knock Children’s Museum
We arrived right when they opened and stayed all the way until they closed at 4 p.m.—and the kids never got bored! There are so many hands-on exhibits perfect for younger kids. One big plus: you’re allowed to bring in your own food, and they have a patio outside where we enjoyed some snacks and fresh air. Definitely worth the visit!

LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens
This was a peaceful, beautiful stop. We didn’t go into the Rural Life Museum (there’s a fee), but the Botanic Gardens themselves are free to walk or drive through. One of our favorite parts was the StoryWalk Trail, where you follow the path and read Mortimer’s First Garden as you go. It’s a lovely, God-centered children’s book that prompted some sweet conversations about faith and growth with my girls.

Baton Rouge Zoo
This zoo is a great size for younger kids—easy to walk without feeling overwhelming. Free parking, affordable entry, and a fun variety of animals made it a great outing. We rode the train, but it didn’t go through any animal exhibits, so manage expectations there. Still, the kids enjoyed it, and we appreciated the option to refill drinks for about $2 on a hot Louisiana day.

Final Thoughts

Baton Rouge had its ups and downs, but this trip with four generations of women in my family turned out to be such a blessing. There’s something special about traveling with your mom, your grandma, your sister, and your daughters all together—it reminded me of how precious these simple moments are.

Whether you’re planning a girls’ trip, a homeschool field trip, or just need a change of scenery with your littles, Baton Rouge has some sweet spots to explore—especially when you know where to look.
