Bathtime Color Science: A Fun and Messy Way to Teach Color Mixing

Bathtime Color Science: A Fun and Messy Way to Teach Color Mixing

If your kids are anything like mine, they love any excuse to put on their bathing suits—even if there’s no pool involved! And if you’re anything like me, you love when fun and learning go hand in hand. This washable paint and water color combining activity was a huge hit at our house—and it’s perfect for kids of all ages.

What You’ll Need:

  • Washable Paints – I used Crayola Washable Paints in eight different colors!

  • Small measuring cups – I grabbed mine from Walmart, but here’s a similar set online.

  • Clear plastic cups or bowls (for visibility while mixing)

  • Whisk or spoon

  • A bowl or tub of clean water for rinsing

  • Bathing suits – because yes, they will get wet!

  • Outdoor space – driveway, backyard, or patio

What We Did:

Before the kids came outside, I filled eight small containers with water and added a different washable paint color to each one. I whisked each color into the water to fully combine it—no clumps, just vibrant, liquid color. The setup looked like a rainbow waiting to be explored!

Each child got a few small measuring cups and was free to start mixing. They could dip into any of the eight colors and pour them into their own empty cups to create brand-new combinations.

It didn’t take long before they were shouting things like:

  • “I made teal!”

  • “This one looks like grape juice!”

  • “Whoa, look at this sunset color!”

We talked about:

  • How combining different colors creates new ones

  • What happens when you use more of one color than another

Why We Loved It:

This activity blends art, science, and sensory fun all in one. It’s open-ended, which means younger kids can enjoy the tactile experience while older ones can start to make hypotheses and test outcomes. Best of all, everyone is learning while having a blast.

Clean-Up Was Easy:

Since we were outside and used washable paint, clean-up was a breeze. I handed everyone a hose and let the fun continue with a rinse-off party!

You don’t need a lot—just a little paint, some water, and a warm day to make this magic happen.
