High-Protein Cottage Cheese Smoothie Recipe for Kids Of All Ages
When your kids have just gotten expanders, the adjustment period can be tough—not only because of the discomfort but also due to the need to find softer foods that still provide essential nutrients. Smoothies are a lifesaver in times like these, especially when they’re packed with protein to help keep little ones full and energized.
I recently created this Chocolate Cottage Cheese Smoothie recipe to ensure my children still get the protein they need, especially while they’re recovering and might not be up to chewing tougher foods. This smoothie is creamy, chocolatey, and so delicious, they’ll forget it’s good for them!
Why Cottage Cheese?
Cottage cheese might not be the first ingredient that comes to mind for a smoothie, but it’s actually perfect for a high-protein, creamy texture. Cottage cheese blends well, offering a good amount of protein without overpowering the smoothie with too much dairy flavor. Combined with almond milk and chocolate protein powder, this smoothie tastes more like a milkshake than a health drink!
High-Protein Chocolate Cottage Cheese Smoothie Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup cottage cheese
- 1 cup almond milk (unsweetened or vanilla)
- 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
- 1/2 frozen banana (adds creaminess and natural sweetness)
- 1-2 teaspoons cocoa powder (optional, for extra chocolate flavor)
- Ice cubes (optional, for thickness)
- Sweetener of choice, to taste (e.g., honey, maple syrup, or a few dates for extra sweetness)
Instructions:
- Place all ingredients in a blender.
- Blend until smooth and creamy. If it’s too thick, add more almond milk; if too thin, add extra cottage cheese or a few ice cubes.
- Taste and adjust sweetness if desired.
- Pour into a glass and enjoy!
This smoothie is perfect as a snack or a breakfast drink and is especially helpful during those first few days when biting into food can be a challenge.
Tips for High-Protein Smoothies with Cottage Cheese
- Add Fruit – If your children like different flavors, try swapping the banana for berries or a bit of mango for variety.
- Sneak in Veggies – Adding a handful of spinach or kale doesn’t change the flavor but packs in extra nutrients!
- Extra Creaminess – For kids who like a thicker texture, add a dollop of Greek yogurt or a spoonful of nut butter.
Adjusting to Expanders
Expanders are a common part of many kids' dental journeys, and it’s always nice to find recipes that make life easier during the adjustment period. This cottage cheese smoothie provides the protein they need while keeping things gentle on their teeth and gums. Plus, with chocolate flavor and a creamy texture, it’s a win-win for everyone involved!
