Taking a True Break from Homeschooling This Christmas
As homeschool moms, we live in the rhythm of lesson plans, meal prep, extracurriculars, and endless to-dos. But this Christmas, I’m challenging myself—and you—to take a *true break*. Not just a step back but an intentional pause from parts of our routine that keep us in constant motion.
**What Does a True Break Look Like?**
For me, it means putting away the homeschool books, shelving the projects, and not feeling guilty about it. It’s about resisting the urge to use the “break” as extra time to catch up on math lessons or finish that science unit. Instead, it’s creating space to slow down, breathe, and focus on what truly matters this season.
Here are a few ways I’m intentionally making this happen:
1. **Unplugging from Academics**
No worksheets, no flashcards, no “just one more chapter.” Our family is pressing pause to enjoy the beauty of the season. This doesn’t mean learning stops entirely—it just looks different. Baking Christmas cookies becomes a hands-on math lesson. Watching *The Worst/Best Christmas Pageant Ever* together sparks conversations about kindness, grace, and family.
2. **Simplifying Activities**
Christmas can quickly become overwhelming with events, crafts, and traditions. This year, we’re saying no to the good to make room for the best. Instead of doing *all* the Christmas crafts, we’re choosing a few meaningful ones. Instead of attending every event, we’re prioritizing family time.
3. **Focusing on Rest and Joy**
A true break includes rest. For me, that means enjoying a cup of tea by the tree without feeling the need to multitask. For the kids, it’s playing in their pajamas all morning or reading Christmas stories just for fun.
**Why a Break Matters**
Taking a true break doesn’t just benefit us; it benefits our children. They see that rest is important and that our worth isn’t tied to productivity. It’s an opportunity to model a life that values balance, joy, and time with God.
This Christmas, I encourage you to join me in stepping off the treadmill of constant doing. Embrace the freedom that comes with setting aside the routine and leaning into the simplicity and beauty of the season.
Here’s to a Christmas filled with peace, rest, and sweet moments that remind us why we homeschool in the first place.
