My Goal to Read About All the U.S. Presidents and Their Wives

I’ve always been fascinated by the history of our nation, and as a homeschooling mom, I’m constantly looking for ways to expand both my own knowledge and the curriculum I use with my children. Recently, I decided to take on a personal project that I’m really excited about: reading a book about each of the Presidents of the United States and their wives. It’s a big goal, but I believe it will deepen my understanding of the history that has shaped our country and give me valuable insights into the lives behind the leaders we’ve all learned about.

Why This Goal?

There’s something compelling about the personal lives of the men who have led our country. While we know them for their policies and public personas, reading about their personal journeys—along with the stories of their wives—adds an entirely new dimension to understanding American history. I’m hoping to gain insight into the different eras they lived in, how they handled challenges, and the impact of their relationships on their presidencies.

I also think this project will be a wonderful way to tie in my love for history with homeschooling. As I learn more, I can pass on stories and lessons to my children that they won’t find in their textbooks. Plus, the stories of these first ladies often show how they influenced the course of history in ways that go beyond the public eye.

Presidents/First Ladies I’ve Read About So Far

I’m just starting this journey, but I’ve already read a few fascinating books! Here are the Presidents and First Ladies I've read about so far...

George Washington

Martha Washington

John Adams

Abigail Adams

Thomas Jefferson

James Monroe

John Quincy Adams

Ulysses S. Grant

Edith Wilson

George HW Bush

Barbara Bush

George W Bush

What’s Next?

There are 46 Presidents, and while not all of their stories are as well-known as others, I’m eager to dive into the lives of every single one. I want to understand how each man’s personality and leadership style, as well as his relationship with his wife, shaped his presidency and our country. I’ll be exploring everything from the Founding Fathers to modern-day Presidents, discovering the legacies they’ve left behind.

If you have any recommendations for great books on U.S. Presidents or First Ladies, please send them my way! I’d love to hear what you’ve enjoyed or found insightful.
