Character Before Curriculum: How to Foster Godly Values in Your Children

As homeschooling moms, it’s easy to get caught up in lesson plans, curriculum choices, and academic progress. But as important as academics are, our primary calling is to nurture our children’s hearts and help them grow in godly character. In the end, raising children who love God and live out His values is more valuable than any textbook can offer.

Here are some simple ways to put character first in your homeschool:

1. Lead by Example

Children learn by watching us. If we want them to grow in godly character, we need to model it ourselves. Show them what it looks like to live with integrity, kindness, patience, and humility. Let them see how you handle challenges, disagreements, and even mistakes, always striving to reflect Christ’s love and grace.

“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 11:1

2. Make Time for God’s Word

The Bible is our guide for teaching godly values. Start each day with prayer and Bible reading, making God’s Word a central part of your homeschool. Choose Bible verses or stories that highlight character traits like honesty, forgiveness, and selflessness. Discuss how these traits apply to their everyday lives.

3. Prioritize Relationships Over Routines

Sometimes, it’s easy to focus on getting through the day’s lessons. But when we prioritize relationships—especially our relationship with our children—we create an environment where godly values can take root. If a conflict arises, take the time to talk it through, pray about it, and focus on heart change rather than just behavior correction.

4. Use Life’s Teachable Moments

Character lessons often happen in the small, everyday moments. Whether it’s helping a sibling, showing kindness to a stranger, or dealing with disappointment, these are opportunities to teach godly values. Use these moments to guide your children toward understanding how they can reflect Christ in their actions.

5. Pray for Your Children’s Hearts

Only God can transform hearts. As we teach our children, we also need to cover them in prayer. Ask God to shape their hearts and guide them toward His truth. Pray for wisdom as you lead them and for the Holy Spirit to work in their lives.

Conclusion: Building Character for Life

While academics are important, it’s the godly character we help instill in our children that will last a lifetime. As you homeschool, remember to put character before curriculum, allowing God to guide your children toward living lives that honor Him.
