How Moms Can Biblically Rest (Part 1)

Motherhood is a constant outpouring of energy and love, and while it’s deeply rewarding, it can also leave us feeling drained if we don’t take time to replenish. The Bible encourages rest, not just as a way to recover physically, but also to find spiritual renewal. So how can we, as moms, embrace biblical rest in our modern lives? In this two-part series, we’ll explore practical ways to rest in alignment with God’s Word, while building supportive community connections through church, homeschool groups, and other outlets.

Understanding Biblical Rest

The Bible offers several insights into rest. In Genesis 2:2, God rested after His work of creation, not because He was tired, but to model a rhythm of work and rest: “And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done” (Genesis 2:2, ESV). In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus invites the weary to come to Him for rest, offering a kind of spiritual refreshment that surpasses physical rest: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30, ESV).

Biblical rest goes beyond just taking a nap or relaxing; it’s about finding peace and renewal in God's presence. For moms, this means we don’t have to constantly push ourselves to the point of exhaustion. Instead, we can honor God by taking intentional breaks, seeking Him in prayer, and gathering strength in His Word. Resting is an act of trust—trusting that God can sustain us and that we don’t have to do it all.

Mom’s Nights Out: Community and Rest

Rest doesn’t always look like solitude. Sometimes, true rest and rejuvenation come through connecting with other moms who understand our challenges. Organizing or attending a mom’s night out with your church or homeschool group can be a wonderful way to step away from the daily grind and focus on fellowship.

Whether it’s meeting for dinner, a casual coffee night, or a fun activity like a paint-and-sip event, these moments provide a break from the routines of motherhood. In the Bible, we see the importance of fellowship in Acts 2:42, where the early believers “devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42, ESV). Fellowship encourages us, lifts us up, and allows us to rest emotionally and mentally as we share life’s burdens.

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll explore more ways to rest biblically, including ladies' conferences, creating a Sabbath rhythm, and resting within your homeschool routine.
