Our Ireland Adventure: Exploring Dublin Through History, Science, and Music
Our Ireland Adventure: Exploring Dublin Through History, Science, and Music
From learning the science behind Guinness to exploring centuries of history at Trinity College and enjoying traditional Irish music, our first Dublin adventures offered something for everyone in our family!
After months of planning a trip for 15 people, we were finally in Ireland and ready to explore! Dublin was our first opportunity to experience the country, and we wanted to make the most of our time there.
We discovered a mix of history, culture, and fun experiences that appealed to different ages in our group. Some things were exactly what I expected, while others surprised me. And a few came with practical lessons I'll remember for future travels!
Guinness Storehouse: We Came for the View!
Neither my husband nor I drink beer, so visiting the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin might seem like an unusual choice for our family. But we had another reason for wanting to go: we wanted to visit the highest point in Dublin!
The Guinness Storehouse is home to the Gravity Bar, where visitors can enjoy panoramic views across the city. That alone made it worth considering for our itinerary.
What we didn't expect was how interesting the tour itself would be.
The experience walks you through the process of making Guinness, explaining the ingredients, brewing process, and science behind the beer. Even though we weren't there for the beer tasting, we enjoyed learning about how it all comes together.
One of my favorite parts was the section where you get to smell the different aromas associated with the ingredients and flavors of the beer. It was fascinating to experience how different smells contribute to the finished product. One of them reminded me of a very smoky caramel, which was especially memorable!
You can sample Guinness during the tour, too, but we passed on that part. At the end, our tickets included a drink, so we headed up to the Gravity Bar and enjoyed our sodas while taking in the views of Dublin.
It was a fun way to finish the tour, and we got to enjoy the panoramic scenery without needing to be beer drinkers!
My takeaway: You don't have to be a beer drinker to enjoy the Guinness Storehouse. If you're visiting Dublin, it's worth considering for the history, science, interactive exhibits, and city views alone. It's a good reminder that sometimes an attraction has more to offer than its name might suggest!
Trinity College and the Book of Kells: A Highlight of Our Trip
Visiting Trinity College Dublin and seeing the Book of Kells was one of the experiences I was most looking forward to on our trip to Ireland!
We started with a guided tour of Trinity College, which gave us an opportunity to learn about the history of this famous university. I always enjoy understanding the stories behind the places we visit, and the guided tour helped us appreciate the history surrounding us.
Then it was time for the Book of Kells Experience.
There's quite a bit of buildup leading to the actual book, with exhibits that provide background and context before you reach the manuscript itself. I was so excited to finally see it, but I'll admit that the actual viewing was a little disappointing. Only two pages were open for display in a very dark room, so it wasn't quite the experience I'd imagined.
However, there was so much more to the experience than just viewing the manuscript!
The library was undergoing renovations during our visit, so it didn't look quite like the pictures you might have seen. Most of the books had been removed, but they had left one whole section of books in place so visitors could get a sense of what the library would look like filled with its historic collection. Even with the renovations, it was amazing to see!
And the interactive exhibits at the end of the Book of Kells Experience were just incredible. They brought the history and collections to life in a way that made the visit feel much more immersive. I'm so glad we took the time to explore those exhibits rather than thinking the experience ended with the manuscript itself.
Despite my mixed feelings about the brief viewing of the Book of Kells, this was one of my favorite experiences of our entire Ireland trip. The history, the library, and the interactive exhibits made the visit worthwhile.
No picture or video does the library justice. You really just have to visit!
My takeaway: If Trinity College and the Book of Kells are on your Ireland itinerary, allow time to explore the full experience, including the interactive exhibits. I also recommend checking the official Book of Kells Experience website before your visit so you know what to expect, especially if renovation work is still underway.
A Little Reminder About Irish Weather
There was one other lesson from our visit: Ireland's weather can change quickly!
The day we visited Trinity College, it rained quite a bit, and we weren't prepared with our rain jackets. After all our planning, we still managed to get caught off guard by the weather.
It was a good reminder that even if the forecast looks promising, it's wise to have waterproof layers with you. When you're walking around Dublin and exploring outdoor areas, a rain jacket can make a big difference in how comfortable you are.
We had actually purchased waterproof jackets for everyone before the trip, but we didn't have them with us when we needed them that day. Sometimes it's not enough to own the right gear—you have to remember to bring it along!
Traditional Irish Music and a Little Disney Magic
One of the neatest experiences we had in Dublin was a musical pub tour!
The tour took us inside two different pubs, where we got to experience traditional Irish music and see a little more of the atmosphere inside these local gathering places. It was a fun way to experience a piece of Irish culture that goes beyond sightseeing.
One thing that really stood out was how gracious the musicians were to all the children in our group. They played traditional Irish music, but they also made an effort to include songs the kids would recognize. At one point, they even played the theme song from Frozen!
It was such a thoughtful touch, and it made the experience enjoyable for the children as well as the adults. Traveling with a big family means finding activities that appeal to different ages, and this was a wonderful example of an experience that brought everyone together.
I loved that we got to enjoy Irish music while also seeing how welcoming and accommodating the musicians were to our group. It wasn't just a tour where we listened to music; it was an opportunity to enjoy the culture together as a family.
My takeaway: If you're visiting Dublin with children, don't assume cultural experiences have to be just for the adults. Look for opportunities that welcome families and make the experience engaging for everyone. Our musical pub tour was a lovely reminder that a little flexibility and a few familiar songs can make an experience special for all ages!
A Few Tips for Exploring Dublin with Your Family
Looking back on our time exploring Dublin, here are a few things I'd recommend to other families planning a visit:
Look beyond the obvious attraction. The Guinness Storehouse offered interesting science and history, even for visitors who don't drink beer.
Book guided tours when you want context. Learning about Trinity College's history helped us appreciate what we were seeing.
Set realistic expectations. The Book of Kells display wasn't quite what I'd imagined, but the library and interactive exhibits made the visit worthwhile.
Bring waterproof layers—and keep them handy! Dublin's weather can change quickly, and we learned this lesson firsthand.
Look for activities that work for different ages. Our musical pub tour was a great example of an experience that adults and children could enjoy together.
Leave room for surprises. Some of the best memories come from unexpected details, whether it's an interesting smell on a tour or hearing a familiar Disney song played by Irish musicians.
Dublin Was Just the Beginning!
Our time in Dublin gave us a wonderful introduction to Ireland. We explored history, learned something new, enjoyed traditional music, and made memories with our children and extended family.
Not every attraction was exactly what I expected, but that is part of traveling! Sometimes an experience surprises you in the best way, and other times you come away with a different appreciation for what you saw.
Most of all, I loved getting to experience these places with my family. We had traveled a long way to get to Ireland, and it was exciting to finally begin discovering the country together.
And we still had so much more of Ireland ahead of us!
Our Dublin adventures were only the beginning of this family trip, and I can't wait to share more of the places we explored and the memories we made along the way.
