Our Ireland Adventure: The Cliffs of Moher, Sheepdogs, and an Ancient Irish Tomb
Our Ireland Adventure: The Cliffs of Moher, Sheepdogs, and an Ancient Irish Tomb
Some places live up to the hype, and the Cliffs of Moher absolutely did for us!
After a quieter day of travel and rest, we were ready to get out and explore again. We ended up having a full day of incredible scenery, adorable animals, ancient history, a little Irish rain, and a delicious dinner in Galway.
It was one of those days that reminded me why Ireland is such a special place to visit. There was so much variety, and every stop gave us something different to remember.
The Cliffs of Moher: Worth the Hype!
Our first major stop was the Cliffs of Moher, and we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day. The sun was shining, visibility was excellent, and we could see the cliffs stretching dramatically along the Atlantic coastline.
The views were incredible!
We took a long walk so we could admire the cliffs from several different angles. I loved having time to explore rather than rushing to one viewpoint, taking a picture, and immediately heading back to the car. The cliffs are so impressive that it's worth slowing down and enjoying the scenery.
Go in the Morning if You Can
One of my biggest recommendations is to visit the Cliffs of Moher in the morning, before the tour buses arrive.
Getting there earlier gave us a chance to enjoy the views and walk along the cliffs before the busiest part of the day. If you're planning a visit, I would absolutely try to make this one of your first stops of the day.
Of course, the weather can affect visibility, so you may not always get the sunny views we had. We felt incredibly fortunate that the skies were clear and we could really appreciate the dramatic coastline.
A Practical Tip: Plan Your Bathroom Stops!
Now for the less glamorous but very practical family travel advice.
The bathroom situation at the Cliffs of Moher was not what I expected. There was one main bathroom area, and it was unisex. It wasn't even inside the welcome center, either!
With eight children in our larger travel group, bathroom planning was always an adventure. I ended up trekking up and down that big hill with my littles when they needed to go potty.
And, of course, getting little ones to the bathroom is never quite as quick as you'd hope. By the time we made the trip, I was ready for a rest!
My advice: have everyone use the bathroom before you start your walk, and make sure the little ones go before you leave the car if possible. It can save you a lot of unnecessary hiking.
Despite the bathroom adventures, the Cliffs of Moher were absolutely worth visiting. The views were breathtaking, and it was one of the highlights of our day.
Caherconnell Sheepdog Demonstration: An Unforgettable Experience
After taking in the cliffs, we headed to Caherconnell for a sheepdog demonstration. This was one of my favorite experiences of the day!
Watching a trained sheepdog work with its handler was amazing. These dogs are incredibly intelligent, and seeing them respond to commands and guide the sheep was fascinating. It's one thing to hear about traditional sheep farming in Ireland, but watching the dogs work brings that way of life to life.
The experience was especially fun for our group because everyone who wanted to got to hold a lamb!
And when I say lamb, I mean a lamb that was bigger than some of the smallest members of our group. It was pretty hilarious seeing our littlest travelers next to these not-so-tiny babies.
The kids loved getting to interact with the animals, and it was a wonderful hands-on experience for our whole group. It was also a great reminder that Ireland's countryside is about much more than beautiful green hills. Traditional farming and sheepdogs are an important part of the culture, too.
I also bought some goat cheese while we were there, which we enjoyed with dinner one evening later in the trip. I always love bringing home—or, in this case, eating later on the trip—a little taste of a place we've visited!
If you're traveling with children, I highly recommend looking into a sheepdog demonstration. It was educational, entertaining, and memorable for both the adults and the kids.
Poulnabrone Dolmen: Ancient History and Very Irish Weather
While we were waiting for our tour time at Caherconnell, we visited Poulnabrone Dolmen, an ancient portal tomb in the Burren region.
The tomb is made up of large limestone stones, with a massive capstone resting across upright stones. It looks almost unreal against the rocky landscape, and it's a fascinating glimpse into Ireland's distant past.
Poulnabrone dates to the Neolithic period, thousands of years ago. Standing there and thinking about the people who built it—and the lives they lived so long before us—was pretty remarkable.
We also had a little mystery to solve. We suspect that the famous photograph of Poulnabrone may be the one featured on the cover of some Celtic Thunder CDs. We haven't confirmed that, but we thought it was a fun possibility!
And then there was the weather.
We got rained on while we were at the tomb. Before we could even make it halfway back to the cars, the rain had stopped.
Welcome to Ireland!
That pretty much summed up the changeable Irish weather. One minute you're getting soaked, and the next you're wondering why you hurried back toward the car.
Even with the rain, I'm glad we stopped. Poulnabrone was a relatively short visit that gave us the chance to see a remarkable historic site while filling the time before our sheepdog demonstration.
Dinner in Galway at The King's Head
After a full day of sightseeing, walking, animals, and unpredictable weather, we wrapped things up with dinner at The King's Head in Galway.
By then, we were ready to sit down, enjoy a meal, and relax together.
The food was really good! We enjoyed Irish stew and fish and chips—two classic choices that felt just right after a day exploring the Irish countryside.
There's something satisfying about ending a busy travel day with a hearty meal. We had seen dramatic cliffs, learned about traditional sheep farming, visited an ancient tomb, and experienced a little of Ireland's famous weather. Dinner gave us a chance to slow down and enjoy being together before heading on to our next adventure.
Tips for Planning This Day in Ireland
If you're hoping to fit these stops into one day, here are a few things I'd keep in mind:
Visit the Cliffs of Moher early. We loved having a sunny morning to explore the views, and I'd recommend arriving before the tour buses if your schedule allows.
Wear comfortable walking shoes. You'll want them for exploring the cliffs and walking around the historic sites.
Plan bathroom breaks ahead of time. With young children especially, take advantage of bathroom opportunities before starting a long walk.
Check the sheepdog demonstration times. We used the time before our scheduled tour to visit Poulnabrone Dolmen, which worked well for us.
Bring rain gear even when the forecast looks promising. We had beautiful sunshine at the cliffs and a quick downpour at the tomb. Irish weather keeps you guessing!
Leave room for a good meal. We enjoyed ending our day in Galway with Irish stew and fish and chips at The King's Head.
A Day Full of Ireland's Best
This day had a little bit of everything: spectacular coastal views, fascinating ancient history, traditional Irish farming, adorable lambs, and a delicious dinner.
The Cliffs of Moher were every bit as impressive as we'd hoped, and the sheepdog demonstration was a wonderful experience for our entire group. Poulnabrone gave us a chance to pause and imagine Ireland thousands of years ago, even if we did get caught in a quick shower along the way.
Traveling with a big group and eight children means that even a well-planned day comes with a few unexpected adventures—usually involving a bathroom, a change in the weather, or both!
But those are often the moments that make the best stories later.
And for us, this was a day full of beautiful views, new experiences, and memories that made our Ireland adventure even more special.
