Day 3: Start Small – Making the Most of Short Moments

Let’s get practical. Life with little kids often means that long, uninterrupted quiet times are a luxury we simply can’t afford. Between changing diapers, managing tantrums, and juggling a multitude of responsibilities, it can feel nearly impossible to carve out significant chunks of time for prayer and Bible study. But here’s the truth: God doesn’t need hours of our time to speak to us or to transform our hearts. He delights in every moment we offer to Him, no matter how short.

In this post, we’ll explore how to start small and make the most of those fleeting moments throughout the day. Whether it’s a quick prayer while washing dishes or reading a single verse during nap time, we can still cultivate a rich spiritual life amidst the chaos of motherhood.

Starting Small: Finding God in Everyday Tasks

Sometimes, the best moments with God happen in the most mundane tasks. When you’re washing dishes, you might take a moment to thank God for your family or to pray for patience and strength as you navigate the challenges of the day. You can also use this time to listen to an audio Bible or a short devotional podcast. By turning everyday chores into opportunities for connection, you’ll find that your heart remains anchored in God throughout the day.

Tip: Keep a prayer list or specific scripture passages in mind while you work, so you can easily focus your thoughts and prayers during these tasks.

Making Space for God’s Word

To truly embrace these small moments, we need to set ourselves up for success by intentionally placing Bibles or devotionals in accessible spots throughout the house. Here are some ideas for where to keep your spiritual resources:

  • Kitchen Counter: Place a small devotional or a Bible next to your sink or on your kitchen counter. This way, during those moments of waiting—like when the kettle is boiling or while cooking—you can easily grab it and read a verse or two.

  • Bathroom: If you have a few extra moments while getting ready in the morning or winding down at night, keep a Bible or devotional on the bathroom counter. It’s a perfect place for a quick read.

  • By Your Bedside: Having a Bible or devotional on your nightstand can encourage you to read before bed or first thing in the morning, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

  • Car: Consider keeping an audio Bible or a sermon podcast downloaded on your phone or in the car for those moments when you’re driving to and from places. You can listen to Scripture or teachings while running errands, helping to fill your heart with truth.

Utilizing Short Moments Wisely

You might be surprised at how much you can absorb in just a few minutes. Here are some practical ways to maximize those short moments throughout your day:

  • Morning Mindset: Begin your day with a quick prayer or by reading a single verse. This sets a positive tone for your day and helps you feel more connected to God, even if it’s just for a moment.

  • Naptime Nourishment: When your little ones nap, use that quiet time to read a chapter of a devotional or meditate on a specific passage. Even if it’s brief, this time can be spiritually refreshing.

  • Evening Reflections: At the end of the day, reflect on your day with gratitude. Thank God for the little moments and the strength He provided, even in the chaos. This can be a simple prayer as you settle down for the night.

God Uses Our Moments

Remember, even if it’s just a few minutes here and there, God can use those moments to refresh and strengthen our hearts. He sees our efforts to connect with Him, and He honors the time we give Him, no matter how small.

As we learn to embrace these short moments with God, we can develop a deeper relationship with Him that transcends the limitations of our busy lives. Let’s commit to starting small and making the most of every opportunity to draw closer to Him, even in the midst of our daily chaos.
